Micro-tunneling
Storyboard

Client: The City of Calgary
Department: Utilities Delivery - Infrastructure Services
Scope:
Storyboard, Custom illustration, and copy
Role:
Illustrator and Designer

Challenge

The City of Calgary needed a 15-second illustrated storyboard to explain how micro-tunneling works. While the client provided a reference video, rough scene directions, and visual references, they relied on me to shape the creative approach, develop the illustrations, and build the storyboard.

Approach

I began by researching micro-tunneling and reviewing other videos to better understand the process. Using the client’s references, I created initial sketches, proposed style directions, and included examples of the City of Calgary’s brand colours for consistency.

After a few rounds of feedback, the storyboard sketches were approved. I then developed vector illustrations, followed by writing copy and adding captions.

Throughout the project, I collaborated closely with the client and incorporated engineer feedback, making multiple revisions to ensure technical accuracy—particularly around the piping length.

Outcome

The client approved the final package, which successfully balanced technical accuracy with visual clarity and brand alignment. I delivered the complete files to the animator, ensuring they had everything needed for production. The project will provide the City with a professional, engaging, and on-brand animation to communicate a complex infrastructure process in a way that was accessible to the public.

“Thanks for this – it all looks really great!”
